GSM Permanent Residency Visas
On 1 July 2012 a new approach to the GSM permanent visa stream, SkillSelect, was introduced, ending the distinction between onshore and offshore permanent GSM visas. Under SkillSelect applicants, regardless of their location, are now considered for either the independent skilled visa subclass 189 or the State/Territory Government sponsored visa subclass 190.
In order to apply for one of these visas intending applicants must first receive an invitation from the Department of Home Affairs, inviting them to apply. To obtain an invitation, intending applicants must demonstrate their ability to satisfy the criteria for a permanent GSM visa via an Expression of Interest, which is lodged online with the Department of Immigration.
The permanent Skilled Regional visa subclass 887 has not been affected by the introduction of Skills Select and can still be applied for by people who hold a qualifying visa without the need for an invitation. Please click this link for further information on the skilled regional sponsored visas
