There are options for an organisation to invite an overseas national to undertake activities in Australia that do not ordinarily attract remuneration or which do not necessarily involve an employer-employee relationship. At times organisations bring groups of persons under this scheme to undertake activities such as structured training programs, relevant religious work, academic research, sporting, entertainment and other special events.
These visas are only available where the activity is temporary in nature. The overseas national must not have an intention of remaining in Australia on a permanent basis. In certain cases, there is scope for the overseas national to have restricted work rights in Australia while holding the relevant visa.
The organisation must apply for or hold a Temporary Activities Sponsorship agreement with the Department. Please follow this link for information on becoming a sponsor under the Temporary Activities scheme and the associated obligations.
