On 1 July 2008, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) opened 3 new “Centres of Excellence” designed to streamline the processing of 457 visa applications.

DIAC has undertaken to process applications for 457 visas within 48 hours. This means that either a decision will be made or a request for more information will be sent to applicants within two business days.

At a recent meeting with Department of Immigration officials attended by Visa Lawyers Australia, the Manager of the DIAC Temporary Business Entry team emphasized the importance of lodging applications that are as complete as possible: “Applications with all required information will be decided at the initial assessment stage. If you do not include all necessary supporting documents with your application, you will be contacted and asked to provide this at a later date. You should ensure you include any medical and character checks where required.”

The Centres of Excellence, and two-day processing time offered by DIAC, are part of a range of Departmental initiatives to better assist employers in meeting Australia’s current demand for skilled workers.
